Linda J. Smith, BSE, FACCE, IBCLC - military spouse of a USAF Colonel with 26 years' service.

Breastfeeding in Combat Boots is a much needed resource for active-duty mothers and mothers-to-be, who are seeking information and support on how to breastfeed successfully while serving their country.

Are you pregnant and in the military? Do you want to breastfeed, but just don't know how you can combine 12 hour shifts, training exercises, or deployment with breastfeeding your baby? Robyn Roche-Paull answers these questions and more in Breastfeeding in Combat Boots - A Survival Guide to Successful Breastfeeding While Serving in the Military. As a veteran of the United States Navy, mother of three breastfed children, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and La Leche League Leader, the author has helped many active-duty mothers breastfeed their babies. She has now compiled this knowledge into a comprehensive guide to help all mothers in the military breastfeed their babies successfully.

Most services now have written policies in place to support breastfeeding and direct commanders to provide a place and time for pumping milk. However, even with the policies in place, military mothers face unique circumstances that can make breastfeeding successfully a challenge. This book was written to help military mothers overcome the challenges they face so they can provide the best nutrition for their babies. Some of the topics covered include

How do I get breastfeeding off to a good start in only six short weeks?
Can I pump while in the desert for training exercises?
Is my pump allowed onboard ship?
Do I need to pump and dump if I've been exposed to JP-8?
How do I deal with co-workers who do not support my pumping while on duty?

These questions and more are answered in Breastfeeding in Combat Boots! In this book, the author provides military moms with insight into the rewarding and wonderful aspects of breastfeeding on active duty, while also giving a realistic look at the challenges that lay ahead. If you are an active-duty pregnant or breastfeeding mother or you work with active-duty mothers, this book is a must-have book for your resource library. Not only is it comprehensive and easy-to-read, it also includes many testimonials from military moms who have successfully breastfed and are happy to share their experiences!

Wish I would have known about this book sooner. I was halfway done with it when I gave birth to my second child. I learn about it through my p3t program. I was successful this time around and felt that it gave me the resources I needed as a military mom. I recommend this book honestly to all working moms.

Breastfeeding in Combat Boots A Survival Guide to Successful Breastfeeding While Serving in the Military eBook Robyn RochePaull Reviews

I am a first time mom in the military and I just loved this book. The book does not cater to one specific branch of service so you are opened up to great ideas from various women that are in the same position as you. Trying to breastfeed is hard enough, add military life to it and you get a combination that can be hard to work through. This book not only inspires you to want to make it work but it also gives you plenty of suggestions, ideas, personal stories, and even resources to help you along the way. I would suggest reading this or giving this as a gift to someone that is in the military considering breastfeeding.
As an Active Duty mom who nursed one son and is due with #2 any day now. I can not say enough what a great help this book has been even just preparing for the second a time around. This book is a must buy and helps to reassure women they are not alone in their struggles as I often felt with no one else around me who understood the unique issues I faced. I recommend this to all military women who want to nurse their children. I've bought a copy for my (expecting) sister who is also AD.
So far, I love this book. I am in the last chapter. Very helpful information. I haven't had my son yet but I will be sure to use some of the pointers in this book.
Excellent information for ALL mother's returning to work. Traveling and packing breastmilk extremely helpful
If you think you have every breastfeeding manual that you could ever need, you are mistaken. Most books about working and breastfeeding do not apply to mothers who are in the military (or those in similar fields such as EMT or police officer). This book is the perfect manual for military mothers. Each section of the book is carefully and thoroughly researched. In addition to giving the "how to" of making breastfeeding work in a very challenging & difficult work environment, it also provides the regulations for each branch of service to ensure that mothers know their rights. It is clear that the author has spent time ensuring that all the information she provides is up to date and accurate.

I highly recommend this book to mothers and those who are in a position to support the breastfeeding military mother. This information has been needed for a very long time and now we finally have it in a lightweight easy to read book. As a breastfeeding counsellor at a Navy Base, this will be an invaluable resource for me. THANK YOU!
This book provides very practical and useful information and is written in an easy to read manner. The table of contents is also excellent for easily finding specific information. I highly recommend it for all nursing mothers and especially those in the military. The only downside is that the print is very small which is hard for "grandma eyes" to read without good reading glasses.
While certainly geared toward the nursing military mom, this book gives all the information any nursing mom needs, whether working or not. The beginning explains the entire anatomy of nursing which is something every nursing mom should know. I didn't read this till after I had my 3rd child in 2011 and even though I had nursed my first two, I really wish this book had been around then or that I had even read it sooner than I did. Such great information on proper nutrition and needs of a baby that reassure the new mom she is most likely doing it right. The discussion about pumping and challenges in the work place are also awesome. Even outside of the military not everyone has a supportive work environment to pump and this book was just such an inspiration on that it can be done. I highly recommend this to every pregnant women who even thinks they want to nurse their baby.
Wish I would have known about this book sooner. I was halfway done with it when I gave birth to my second child. I learn about it through my p3t program. I was successful this time around and felt that it gave me the resources I needed as a military mom. I recommend this book honestly to all working moms.
